Dental hygiene assessment

During your first visit to the Lasalle Dental Hygiene Centre, we will ask you to complete a dental, medical, and personal history form.

The information requested tells us about your general health, confirms that you are a safe candidate for a dental cleaning, and helps us develop your personalized oral hygiene plan. It is crucial for us to be aware of any health conditions that may affect your oral hygiene.

Dental scaling

Scaling/debriding is a procedure in which a dental hygienist removes harmful plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces using manual scalers and ultrasonic devices. Plaque and tartar are composed of bacteria, which are the primary cause of bad breath, tooth decay, bleeding gums, gum disease, and the resulting tooth loss. Regular cleanings by a dental hygienist, combined with good daily home care, are an effective way to treat or prevent these conditions.

Application of fluoride

Fluoride Treatments have a positive impact on our oral health by increasing our tooth’s resistance to decay. Our teeth are naturally covered by enamel which is our teeth defense system to protect it from cavities and tooth decay. If proper care is not given to our teeth over time bacteria can take over and destroy this protective layer. Regular fluoride treatments help strengthen your teeth enamel and decreases your chances of getting tooth decay.

If you prefer to avoid fluoride, we can provide you with a xylitol rinse to use at home. Xylitol is a crystalline carbohydrate derived from plants which prevents bacteria from adhering to the tooth structure thereby reducing acid production in the mouth. It is a natural, safe and effective way to fight decay and inflammation in the mouth.

It can also help to naturally increase salivary flow for people who struggle with dry mouth (xerostomia).

Sealant

Pit and fissure sealants are an excellent way to prevent cavities from developing on the chewing surfaces of teeth. A BPA-free coating seals the grooves of the teeth, preventing bacteria from entering and initiating the decay process.

Sealants are particularly important as a preventative measure against decay in children with newly erupted molars, although any time is a good time to prevent decay. If the tooth does not yet have a cavity or filling, a sealant can be applied.

Si la dent n'a pas encore de carie ou d'obturation, un scellant peut être posé.

Desensitizer

Many of us have experienced bothersome symptoms of tooth sensitivity from time to time. These symptoms can be described as short bursts of mild to intense stabbing sensations in the teeth when they are touched, exposed to temperature changes, or different types of food. Some causes of tooth sensitivity include exposed roots due to receding gums or worn tooth surfaces. Other factors contributing to sensitivity include enamel mineralization loss or even tooth decay.

Treatments for tooth sensitivity range from the regular use of over-the-counter toothpastes designed to reduce sensitivity to professional in-office desensitization with a licensed oral health professional, such as a dental hygienist. If you are experiencing symptoms of tooth sensitivity, schedule an appointment with our dental hygienist to discover the cause of your sensitivity and choose the treatment that's right for you!

Teeth whitening

The outer enamel layer of our teeth is porous and permeable. Over time, dark stains from food and drinks are absorbed and trapped beneath the enamel surface, resulting in dull, gray, or yellow teeth. Once this happens, ordinary dental polishing cannot reach the deeper stains to restore the teeth to their original brightness and shine.

Teeth whitening involves applying hydrogen peroxide-based agents to the surface of the teeth. The product penetrates beneath the enamel, interacts with the trapped stain, and removes it, leaving a whiter, brighter, and more attractive smile.

As teeth whitening is immensely popular, numerous systems are available to meet this demand. However, not every product is suitable for every patient. It is best to consult a licensed oral care professional to discuss the various teeth whitening formulations, their safety, and their effectiveness.

Polishing

Consuming various beverages, foods, and other products can leave unsightly stains on the surface of teeth. Professional polishing agents are applied to the teeth using a rotating, soft polishing cup to remove these types of stains. Clients tell us they love the revitalized, cleaner, and shinier look and smooth feel of their teeth after a polishing procedure.

Cleaning removal dental prosthesis

Removable dentures, whether partial or complete, require proper care and maintenance to keep them clean, stain-free, functional, and looking their best. It's important to understand that dentures also accumulate plaque and tartar and harbor bacteria, which, like natural teeth, must be professionally cleaned.
